For the OTDR-test on single-mode fibers, we have two OTDR’s from Agilent Technologies available. Thus we have the opportunity to record the traces from both sides at once.
One OTDR is the N3900A with the module N3914AL for tests at 1310, 1550 and 1625 nm, the second OTDR is also an N3900A, but with the module N3916AL with 4 wavelengths, 1310, 1480, 1550 and 1625 nm. This module can be also used for the single-end test of Chromatic Dispersion.
Usually the traces are done with launch leads, but they could be taken also with launch leads in the front and launch leads at the far end (advantage for evaluate of connector loss), according to customer request. We have launch leads with standard single mode fiber (G.652) with the most common types of connectors such as SC/PC, SC/APC, LC/PC, E2000/HRL, but also different types of fiber such as LEAF fiber (G.655) or TrueWave RS-fiber (G.655). All of our OTDR traces are fitted with unique file name and stored in Bellcore standard.
For analyze of OTDR-traces we use the software FiberDoc. A show version of FiberDoc can be given to the customer for consideration of the traces (see also the documentation). For serial measurements, the parameters for the different wavelengths can be individually preset. There are also several measurements at the same wavelength but with different pulse widths possible. This is very interesting, if long links are to be recorded, but also events at the near end, such as a pigtail, or another patch should be further investigated.
The devices save the traces with different file names and increment the fiber counter automatically. An analysis of the events does already take place during the measurement of the OTDR.
